Per copyright law, the holder of the copyright can ask the courts for damages of not less than $750 and not more than $30,000 per violation (or song played). If the court deems that your violations are willful, an additional $150,000 could be added to the total. 

Restaurant owners typically need a license for a public performance to play music in restaurants. Even if the music is recorded, it’s considered a public performance in the terms of copyright law.
